Men from Barracks Five
Camp S-116, Clearfield, Pennsylvania
The note on the back of the photo says Barracks 5. There are five such photos and as such presumably is all the men from each barracks in the camp. The photos seem to be taken on the front steps of a common building, which is probably the mess hall or possibly the Camp Headquarters.
Note the Sergeants Stripes on the man in the Center. Sergeants Stripes of some sort were often used to denote Enrollee Leaders. This man was probably the Barracks Leader and would be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and some order within the Barracks. For this duty he received extra pay. Leaders would also serve in the roles of Team Leader in the Field, Company Clerk, Cook, Supply Sergeant, Medical Assistant and so forth, often with Assistant Leaders under them.
Photos are by Ralph L. Emery, Enrollee, CCCMan, Company 1910, Camp S-53, Sigel, Pennsylvania & Camp ANF-3, Kane, Pennsylvania & Camp S-116, Clearfield, Pennsylvania
