When my grandpa entered the army in 1943 he went to boot camp in Southern Indiana. He was there with 8 guys from West Virginia, a man from northern Ohio, and himself, from Cincinnati, Ohio. To go get food you had to wear a tie and dress in perfect uniform. Well the 8 guys from West Virginia had never had a tie on in their lives. So that first night, he and the other guy from northern Ohio stayed up all night to tie ties for every one of the guys from W.V. When boot camp was finally over and they were ready to go to war, there were lines in the ties because of dirt. The West Virginians never untied those ties throughout boot camp.
