First flag put up on top of Suribachi by the Marines. A ship's captain noticed the flag and suggested that a larger flag used on his battleship be sent up to replace this small flag. The ship's flag was forwarded and brought up by the Marines and put in place by five men immortalized in Joe Rosenthal's famous picture.
