38th Division, USA
From The CCC Discharge and some photos of Mr. Callahan's found on ebay
Joseph P. Callahan, CC5-197449, was born in Beard West Virginia. He enrolled in the CCCs July 8, 1936. He was 19 years of age at the time. His profession when he joined was a farmer and truck driver. Mr. Callahan had blue eyes, light brown hair and fair complexion and was six feet two inches tall.
Mr. Callahan was assigned to CCC Company 1580, Camp F-19, in Minnehaha Springs, West Virginia. He performed labor with the rest of the company. Then on April 1, 1937 he became one of the Company truck drivers.
Like many CCC enrollees Mr. Callahan took some time to himself, and was AWOL for twenty four hours from 6:00 Am April 4 to April 5 and then again from six am to ten thirty pm on April 27th. Perhaps he was securing work for he was honorably discharged from the CCCs to accept employment on June 9, 1937.
Afterwards at some point Mr. Callahan appears to have joined the Army and served with the 38th Infantry Division. He left in his effects many photos of men from this unit. Some include men posing in barracks and beside a 38th Div HQ sign. I believe one man who appears in more then one photo with sergeant stripes is possibly Mr. Callahan.
