Lyle Gaston joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Gaston crushed limestone rock, planted trees and dug diversion ditches. He earned $30 a month and sent $25 to his family.
"Believe it or not, I always had money," said Gaston, "But we were poor like everyone else. We done well to have enough food to eat."
