Biography of Irven McKey
CCC Man, Company 4805, Camp G-25-W, Basin, Wyoming
My husband's father, Irven McKey, who is now deceased, was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Company 4805, Basin, Wyoming in 1939-40. You may be interested in a group/camp photo and roster of Company 4805 that my mother-in-law sent us last month. The photo was not in good condition, having been rolled up and then mashed, resulting in severe creases, tears and a triangular shaped loss which obliterated one individual and severely damaged others. The photo has been digitally restored as far as possible, but vestiges of the damage remain.
I am attaching the restored photo and a roster copied from the photo and saved in Microsoft Word (which would make it searchable). A couple of things about the roster on the photo--it appears to be incomplete, stopping with the letter S. It seems that the photographer simply ran out of room and just lopped off the names beginning with the remaining letters. The accuracy of the roster is also suspect; one given name was omitted entirely, and my father-in-law's name is spelled incorrectly. The proper spelling is Irven McKey, not Irvin. He is pictured on the right of this photo--the only one with his tie NOT tucked into his shirt.
We recently made a trip to Basin, Wyoming, and fortunately met an old gentleman, a former member of the CCC, who directed us to the site of this camp, which is now the county fairgrounds. A few of the CCC buildings remain and are in use as poultry barns etc. There are now large trees on the grounds which appear to be the ones in this photo.
I hope you find this information useful. If the files do not come through, or there is another problem, please feel free to e-mail me.
