Biographies of Lloyd G.
Stevens and John Earn Stevens and Richard (Dick) Sartors
CCCMen, Company 5705, Camp F-193, Bungalow, CO &
Fort Leonard Wood
My father and his brother and my Uncle
Lloyd G Stevens, Richard (Dick) Sartors, and John
Earn Stevens. were in the CCC’s back in 1939 to 1941. They were drafted for WWII but two of them
were stationed in Pierce, Idaho and the other one was in Fort Leonard
Wood. All three boys were from Missouri.
I have a few pictures of them in front of the barracks and one in front of Army
Forrestry Headquarters Camp F-193, Bungalow, CO 5705
CCC. That was Dick and John. Lloyd was at Ft Leonard Wood. He drove big
equipment.
Their story was simple. It was after the depression and no one had
any money and jobs were scarce. All the
young boys needed jobs and to make some money.
The only job available was in the CCC’s.
They decided to enlist. Apparently,
Dick, John, and Lloyd had a few drinks the night before. Lloyd had a weak
stomach. He was a tall farm boy, 6 foot
1 and broad shouldered with curly, wavy hair.
He wasn’t able to recuperate as quickly as the other two from the
previous night’s activities and he was late getting to the place where they
signed up for the CCC’s. Dick and John
were standing in front of the long line and heard a thump coming from the back
of the room. One of the guys behind them
told them a big boy passed out back there – yep, that was Lloyd. He went home sick. Because he did not sign up the same time as
the other two, they were separated. He
went to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and Dick and John went to Pierce, Idaho.
