Biography of Vernis Ward
CCC Man, Unknown Company, Oregon
My Dad Vernis Ward served in the CCC's. Don't know where he got on the train, probably in Louisville, Kentucky as he was from a small farming community in eastern Kentucky. I don't know what year he was in, but I know he was in Oregon, because he always talked about it. He had a foot locker with items he had brought back with him, such as 2 large pinecones. That locker was always in our home while I was growing up.
I lived in Salt Lake City for several years. He traveled with me when we moved there in 1978, and he talked about how he had crossed the Great Salt Lake on his way back from Oregon by train, but it was at night so he didn't see it. It was a great thrill to him to be able to visit there with me and one of my sisters that was already living there.
He died in 2005 at the age of 91. If anyone served with him and remembers I would love to hear from you.
