Biography of John Patrick Hartigan

Sgt., 13th Fld Obs Bn, VII Corps, 1st Army. USA

My grandfather, Sgt. John Patrick Hartigan served in world war two. He was in the battle of Normandy....I think it was Utah beach...but I'm not sure, I never got the chance to meet him. He died before I was born. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge where he earned a Silver Star. He was in the 1st Army 7th corps 13th field observation battalion. Its funny because he lied about his age to get in. He was 37 when he enlisted. My dad said that he didn't talk much about the war or that much at all afterwards. He was always cold too he said. Even in the summer he would be freezing and have to wear flannel pajamas and a towel around his head. Don't know if it was from the cold weather in the Buldge or pychological.
