Biography of Joseph Darr Smith

CCCman, Three Rivers, California, Sequoia National Forest

My brother, Joseph Darr Smith went in The CCC about 1934. He was 19 at the time. His enlistment was for 6 months. He was stationed in the Sequoia National Forest. His mailing address was Three Rivers Ca. He worked on roads & trails, construction & repairs. He learned blasting. He heard they were hiring blisters for the tunnels on the Metropolitan Aqueduct. This would bring water from the Colorado River to the City of Los Angeles. Darr worked there for about 2 years. Darr had always wanted to a news paper man, he recieved offer of a job on the Los Angeles Daily News as a copy boy. The family story was that he quit a $10.00 a day job on the Aqueduct for $ 10.00 a week newspaper job. He rose to the job of City Editor on the Daily News.
