North East States Civilian Conservation Corps Museum
NACCCA Chapter 170, Camp Conner, Windsor Locks, Conn.
The Northeast States Civilian Conservation Corps Museum is a function part of NACCCA Chapter 170. It was established on January 1, 1993; the official opening was on Memorial Day, 1993. The museum is located in the former headquarters building of Company 1192, Camp Conner, Stafford Springs, Conn. Within two years the museum expanded from a modest 600 square feet to 3000 square feet.
Section one contains hundreds of photographs of CCC camps, camp personnel, CCC projects which will remain as a legacy to the future generations of our country. Other memorabilia includes CCC uniforms, documents, awards, personal letters and copies of individual service discharges.
Section two contains 21 large, 30x40-inch poster boards with pictures of each camp that as in Connecticut. Other exhibits are of a blacksmith forge and blacksmith tools which were used at Camp Conner, a collection of small handtools, ice harvesting tools, telephone linemen's equipment, tree planting, forest cleaning, clear and logging tools, road, bridge and dam construction equipment.
Section three is the meeting and lecture area which is also used for visitor viewing of videotapes of vintage and historical CCC camps and projects.
Section four has a forest fire fighting line camp with a variety of fire fighting and prevention equipment, a barracks section containing an authentic cot, bed roll and foot locker, and a one table mess hall, complete with utensils.
Section five is for displays from other states not in the northeast region.
NACCCA Chapter 170 operates the Northeast States CCC Musuem in what was the Headquaters/Officer Living Quarters of Camp Conner, Windsor Locks, Conn. It is open 12 noon to 4:00p.m., daily, from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
