Biography of Harold William Terrill

My cousin Pvt. Harold William Terrill was involved with underwater demolition from what he said in letters while he was training in Florida...Co.B 299Engr. C. Bn., US Naval A. T. B., Fort Pierce, Fla. was his return address. This is a quote from a letter written Jan. 2, 1944, "We are taking a special training here with the Navy but its very hard but I still like it fine. I work mostly in and under water so I'm really at home here. We are doing demolitan work or rather a few are from each company and the rest are learning invasion tactics so this must be our last training until we start for good."
The 299th Combat Engineers was formed March 1st, 1943 at Camp White, Oregon. The unit Embarked for England from New York on April 8, 1944 and arrived there on the 17th. The 299th landed in Normandy on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. The unit served in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. On VJ day the unit was in Bayreuth Germany. The unit returned to New York on October 17th 1945 and disbanded on the 18th at Camp Shanks, New York.
