Drainage Ditch Digging
With Spade and Hook
CCC Man, friend of James Justin, Stepping from Drainage Ditch with Tools
The purpose of Mosquito Control Companies was to drain stagnant swamp land to reduce disease carrying mosquito populations. The ditch was dug with one CCC man cutting the swamp grass and mud with the shovel while standing out of the ditch and the other man in the ditch grabbing grass with rake, which was called a hook, and hooking it out of ditch and off to the side. Several Hundred Feet of Ditch could be dug by a two man team in a day, though it was hard work.
