Biography of Herman M. Adams
T/Sgt, Engineer-Gunner, B-24, 744th Bomb Sqd., 456th Bomb Grp., 15th A.F., U.S.A.A.F.
I was drafted into the service at Fort McPherson, Ga. After induction into Army of the U.S. from registration at Tavares Florida on November 6. 1941 I was offered branch of service I preferred if I would take a discharge and enlist for 3 yrs. under C. O. G. Sec. X. AR. 615-360 and Par. 1 Special Order #261, Rec. Ctr. Fort McPherson Ga., which I accepted and chose the U.S.Army Air Corps.
I remember vividly the 2 crisp dollar bills and shiny dime I received for the 3 days service in the infantry. I was at Keesler Field, Mississippi when Japs Bombed Pearl Harbor. As it turned out 3 yr. enlistment meant nothing as after Dec 7 41 EVERYONE WAS IN FOR THE DURATION ANY WAY.
I was an Engineer-Gunner in B-24s. I was stationed at Cerignola Field, Foggia, Italy in 1944. I was in the 456th Bomb Group, 744th Bomb Squadron in the 15th Air Force. My missions included Ploesti, Budapest, Bucharest, Weiner-Neustadt, Steyr, all railyards in northern Italy, and Troop Concentrations, German held positions all over Balkans.
I received the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Several Campaign Ribbons and 1 Presidential Unit Citation. I suffered no injuries, just four years lost.
At 85 years of age I am unable to obtain prescription drugs from the VA without paying.
