Biography of Seldon Cunningham
CCC Man, Company 3464, Camp SP-7-TN, Cumberland Mountain State Park, Crossville, TN
My friend, Seldon Cunningham, was in CCC Company 3464, Camp SP-7-N at Cumberland Mountain State Park in Crossville, Tennesee. This State Park was built by the CCC. It is in a mountainous area and has beautiful fall colors and at an elevation of about 2000 feet it is a good place for camping and outdoor activities.
World War I hero Alvin C. York was park superintendent at this park until he resigned to go to Hollywood to assist in the making of the film Sgt. York.
The CCC at Cunberland built a stone arch bridge and dam that is said to be the largest masonry project the CCC ever built. They also made a lake, which now is a very beautiful place.
Seldon Cunningham lied about his age and got in the CCC at age 15. They had him driving a truck in the woods when he was not old enough to drive on the highway. Since they were required to keep a crew in Camp in case of forest fire, the local people would set fires on the weekends to keep the boys in the park fighting fires so they couldn't get passes to go into town and date the local girls. Seldon drove trucks and buses as a career - a trade he learned in the CCC. He died in 1994.

Seldon Cunningham was my Grandfather, this is part of his life I'd never heard about, and in fact... it's something my father, aunt and uncle didn't know about (or at least didn¹t remember) either.
