Biography of John J. Jurras
Educational Advisor/CCC Teacher, Company 146, Camp S-51, Groton State Park, Marshfield, Vermont
I am an 95 year old ex CCC teacher/camp paper editor at Company 146, in Marshfield, Vermont in the Groton State Forest. I was an educational advisor supervisor which means I organized and taught classes to the CCC men. During my tenure the men of Company 146 maintained a high ranking among other camps in our vicinity in educational activities.
In addition to my teaching duties, I also edited and created the camp papers there from 1934-1938. One paper was named the Forest Crier, which was first printed about November 7, 1934. Issue No. 1 was six pages in length and consisted of mimeographed paper with a separate cover which held a portrait of Franklin Roosevelt done by Charles Antonia, a local man. Sections of the Crier would at times be reprinted in the national CCC paper, Happy Times.
I also organized, lead and played on the camps Basketball team. This team, like other CCC camp teams, would compete with local teams in the county.

I attended Spaulding High School in Barre, Vermont from 1925-1929, graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in education in 1933, received a second degree in education from NYU and taught school for thirty-six years at Greenwich High School, Greenwich. I then moved to California with my wife, Lorraine, and I now live in Palm Desert, California.
