Biography of William R. Morris
CCCman
Major, 92nd Div/93rd Div/99th Pursuit Sqdn, USA/USAAF/USAFR
My name is William R. Morris. I served in C.C.C.'s. The C.C.C. camp I served in was Chatsworth, New Jersey in early l94l. While at Chatsworth, NJ CCC camp I served as company clerk, since I knew how to type.
While there I received letter from War Dept. inviting me to enlist in RA (Regular Army) for assignment to 99th Pursuit Squadron, Chanute Field, Rantoul, IL, the first enlistment of Blacks in Army Air Corps. I enlisted Apr 7 l94l (after paying my bus fare from New Jersey to Illinois -- they would not pay my travel). I was one of first 50 blacks to be enlisted in the Air Corps. Also served in both 92d and 93d Infantry Divisions and finished WWII as a Aviation Cadet in Advanced Training at Tuskegee AAF, Alabama. Left Active Duty Dec. l945 and retired as Major USAF Res. in l972. Am now active as an original Tuskegee Airman and am a member of the Tidewater VA Chapter, based at Langley AFB, VA.
