Biography of Donald Laverne Swafford, Sr.

April 9, 1913 to August 9, 1996

     Donald (Don) L. Swafford, Sr. was the youngest of nine children born to Robert R. Swafford and Albertha Ferguson. Don's father had migrated to Texas from Tennessee and first settled in Sherman, Texas area in Grayson County. In 1908 they moved to Tillman County, Oklahoma. Don's father was a wagon master and teamster as well as being a farmer. Don was born in Manitou, Oklahoma April 9, 1913 in Tillman County. His mother and father divorced in 1917 and he and his mother moved to a farm in Ropesvilles, Texas that was owned by a sister. Here he finished High School just as the Great Depression began. Finding little or no work on the Plain of Texas he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Don married Leela Mae Moore in 1938. They had four children; Mary Ann, James Robert (Jim Bob); Donald Laverne Jr.; and Adrain Clinton. They had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

     Donald L. Swafford Sr. had a career in the oil field industry of Texas and Oklahoma. He worked for Gulf Oil and Reasor Drilling Company out of Dallas. He did for a few years try his hand in the drugstore business in Meadow, Texas, and then as a farmer in Ropesville, Texas. He retired in Lubbock, Texas and dabbled in the barber and beauty supply business.

     He often reminisced about his time in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He belonged to Company 855 in El Paso, Texas. The name of the company was "Camp Doniphan". It was commanded by, Capt. E.M. Burnett, Com "d" G - Capt. H.G. Olmsted - 1st Lt. W. Reardon - Maj. G.D. France M.O. It is believed after serving in El Paso that Don may have served also with the CCC in the state of Oregon.

     Donald Laverne Swafford died August 9, 1996 and is buried in Tahoka, Texas.
