Biography of Harry L. Carlisle
Merchant Marine, WWII
I was born in 1928 and in 1944 I joined the Maritime Service. At the ripe old age of 16 I found myself at Sheepshead Bay learning how to become a deck hand on a war time merchant ship.
I made two trips to Europe and was on my second trip there when the war ended in Europe.
I then got on a liberty ship going to the Far East and was anchored at Okinawa when the war with Japan ended.
On one of the ships I served on during free time there were several of us that would get together and play the game of Monopoly. We were serious about it and most of the time the conversation would get quite heated. A guy who worked in the engine room even wrote a poem about it. I don't believe the poem writer ever participated in the game and was merely an observer.
My memory is not too clear after all these years however, I will never forget some of the wonderful people I served with and there kindness to me. When the convoys we were in were attacked I was scared, but the encouragement from my shipmates kept me going.
