Biography of Hugh Detloff
CCC Supervisor, Portal, Arizona & San Simon Arizona
My father, Hugh 'Double' Detloff was a supervisor I think at the Portal camp for sometime. My mother and I were camping in a tent somewhere in the forest. During one of the evenings, a bear walked into our camp, and really scared my mother. After that experience, she and I moved to San Simon. A short time later, my Dad was transferred to San Simon camp. My mother had a picture of the three of us. It had the background of part of the camp, way out in the desert. I don't have any recollection of that time, as I was very young, and only remember what my parents told me. The only thing I can remember about the bear incident is my mother really screaming and terribly scared!
The CCC camp became an R&R during the war. As a youngster I went up to the camp with some friends of mine. My friend's sister was going with an airman from Douglas Air Base at the time, and he was on R&R (Rest and Recuperation) up at the camp, as it was used for that during the war. I can remember a bunch of tables, jukeboxes, and a kitchen where you could get food and beverages, and a lot of soldiers resting about. They even had dances there.
