Biography of William Hartman
CCC Man, Unknown Company
Soldier, Alaska, US Army
Dad's name was Robert J. Hartman. He was in the CCC but in Frederick, Maryland and discharged in 1940 (discharge attached). I came across this CCC group photo in my Father's belongings. I'd asked him about the Fort Knox photo before he died and he couldn't remember whose it was. He thought it may have been his brother William's but we don't see him in the photo. Dad said that Bill was in the CCC, but we never discussed it further. We don't have a CCC photo for my Father.
Dad served in Army in New Guinea and in the PI. He kept the Unit Report detailing their history. His brother was in Alaska, probably Adac...not sure.
My Father was a Tec 4, addressed as Sergeant, when discharged. His unit was Headquarters Battery, 10th Anti Aircraft Artillery Group. This photo of him was taken after the Japanese surrender near Clark AB. Also a photo of Japanese coming down. They were just coming under American control. When he talked about it, Dad always emphasized that the officers still had their swords at this time. He managed to get hold of one at some point.
When they shipped him home, he was hoping to be back home by Christmas. Instead, he and all the others were stuck on a train, in a rail yard in Chicago most of the day on Christmas. Then on to Fort Meade for discharge.
Any information about his unit, company, camp or service would be appreciated.
