Biography of William K.Kerr
CCC Man, Company 3350 Camp G-69-N (Division of Grazing) at Orogrande, New Mexico
I was a member of the C.C.C. 1940-41. I was in Company 3350 Camp G-69-N (Division of Grazing) at Orogrande, New Mexico. I enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pa. I still have my CCC pennant and buttons, my discharge and many photographs. Our job was to build cattle dams and guard in the New Mexico desert. I was in charge of the "Oil House", kinda like a 6 foot by 6 foot gas station. I pumped gas at night when the trucks came in. The old hand pump with the big old glass bottle on top that held the gas. I remember something that had probably happened to a lot of young boys. I had a small dispute with another enrollee and some one yelled out that familiar "put on the gloves", so we did and it was a draw. We had one day a month that we got out of camp. We were bussed about 10 miles to Juarez, Mexico. It was a day we always looked forward to. It was a great experience with lots of memories. Room and board and a dollar a day. It was great. I just found out they have a local CCC chapter in Boise, Idaho and I understand there is a national headquarters that puts out a regular bulletin also. Saw a good documentary on PBC on the CCC. It was real good.
