Biography of Lawrence Laurie
Staff Sergeant, Waist Gunner, 731st Squadron, 452nd Bomb Group, 8th AF, Stalag Luft IV, USAAF
I have been interested in WWII History, and especially the Stalag Luft IV Episode, since My Fathers Passing in 1991. He told me briefly about His Service, and POW experience. I never knew the depth of those until I researched his Service History. I have been in contact with His Former Unit. The 452nd Bomb Group. I have also been in contact with the only two surviving members of His B-17 Crew.
My Dad was drafted in August 1941. He served as a Gunnery Instructor in Las Vegas NV. and Kingman AZ. until late 1943. He then volunteered for overseas duty. He met and trained with his crew here in the states for three months before being sent overseas, and being assigned to the 452nd. He was a member of the USAAF "The Mighty 8th.". 452nd Bomb Group 731st. Squadron. He was a staff sergeant, waist gunner on board B17 42-39976, My Achin’ Back. They flew out of Deopham Green England.
His B-17 Crew was shot down May 12, 1944. The same day Stalag Luft IV officially opened.
