Biography of Paul Erwin "Jumbo" Newland
CCC Man, Company 1230, Camp Lake Cle Elum, Washington & Camp Bradley, Forest Hill, California & Camp West Emerald Fearnwood, Idaho
Miltary Police, US Army, WWII
Paul Erwin "Jumbo" Newland from Branchport, NY was in CCC Company 1230 in 1934-35. Some of his locations were Camp Lake Cle Elum (I think not easy to read on envelope), Washington, August 1934, Camp Bradley, Forest Hill, California March-May 1935 and Camp West Emerald Fearnwood, Idaho. He had a picture of Cathedral Rock Washington, Fish Lake dated 1935.
He was drafted in the Army in late 1942 and was sent to England in July 1943 as a Military Police. he suffered a hemorrhage after being struck on the head, was not expected to live, and was hospitalized. He was then sent to Ft. Dix and Bath NY VA until his discharge on October 17, 1944. He remained on partial disability until his death in 1992.
It would be interesting to hear from relatives of others who were in the same CCC company.
