Corporal, 23rd Bomb Sqdn, 5th Bomb Group (H), USAAF

I really don't know much about my father as I was only 8 when he died. His name was Ralph L. Emery and he was born on Jan. 9, 1920, the eight of 10 children. He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps on Oct. 13, 1937 at Camp S-53, Sigel, Pa. where he was a laborer. He left Sigel on Dec. 15, 1937 and went to Camp ANF-3, Kane, Pa. from Dec. 16, 1937 to Jan. 12, 1938 from where he was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1938.

On July 15, 1938 he was again enrolled, at Brookville, for service at Clearfield, Pa. for Nursery and Roadwork. He was discharged on Dec. 23, 1938 at S-116-Pa, Clearfield, Pa.

On June 22, 1939 he enlisted as Apprentice Seaman for Radioman in the United States Naval Reserve for a 4 year period. He was discharged due to physical defects (5' 6" height, 116 lb....chest at expiration 30"...puney little guy wasn't he!)

BUT the ARMY took him! His enlisted record states that he enlisted on April 7, 1943...was 5' 5" and 111 pounds! He was discharged as a Corporal, 23rd Bomb Squadron, 5th Bomb Group Heavy on Dec. 18, 1945. He had been an AAF Supply Technician in charge of supply for airplane parts. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 7 bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation with 2 bronze stars, Distinguished Unit Award with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

He then worked as a painter for a few years until landing a job with Speer Carbon in St. Mary's, Pa. He worked there until his death on Feb. 27, 1958.
